PERIODONTAL SERVICES OFFERED
Periodontal Therapy Periodontal therapy involves treatment of the diseases that affect
the gums (gingiva) and boney skeletal structures (periodontium) that
support the teeth. The majority of periodontal diseases are germ
(bacteria) induced inflammatory conditions that destroy both gum and
bone.
The primary objectives of therapy are to convert inflamed, deteriorating
conditions into a comfortable, stable state of health. When these
objectives are met, teeth can be saved for a lifetime.
Periodontal disease constitutes the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Almost
three-quarters of all adults show signs of periodontal disease and about
one-half of those people over age 65 have lost teeth. Diseases
often start early in life and painlessly progress until the condition
reaches its advanced state. Advanced disease usually involves painful
abscesses and subsequent tooth loss. Most conditions can be successfully
treated with life-long results. The majority of treatments are
non-surgical in nature; however, advanced cases require more sophisticated
yet minimally invasive surgical therapies.
Modern medications, biologic materials and conservative microsurgical
techniques have allowed the vast majority of our patients to experience
very efficient, comfortable and successful treatment programs.
