What Are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is basically a shell made out of tooth-colored material. We can place a veneer over the visible surface of a tooth in order to make any number of changes to its color, shape, and size. Some of the imperfections that can be corrected using veneers include:
- Minor dental damage, such as small cracks.
- Teeth that are slightly misaligned.
- Small gaps in your grin.
- Stains on your teeth that won’t go away.
- Teeth that are more worn down than usual.
- Teeth that are misshapen in some way.
The Process of Getting Veneers

Before anything else, you will need to schedule a consultation at our office. Even if you’re already sure that you want to enhance your smile with veneers, our team will need to first make sure that you’re a viable candidate for the treatment. We’ll examine your teeth carefully, ask about your goals, and let you know what other cosmetic treatments are available.
In the event that you commit to getting veneers, we will need to prepare the teeth in question by removing some enamel. This is to ensure that the veneers will sit flush against your other teeth in a way that looks natural. Rest assured that only a small amount of enamel will be taken off.
Next, we will create impressions of the prepared teeth. Then the impressions will be sent to a trusted dental lab. Temporary veneers will be placed to protect your smile while you’re waiting for the permanent versions.
You’ll return to our office one last time once your veneers are ready. We’ll be sure to make any necessary last-minute adjustments before attaching the veneers to your teeth. Once we’ve confirmed that you’re satisfied with the results, you’ll be ready to start enjoying your new smile.
The Benefits of Veneers

One of the biggest advantages of veneers is how versatile they are. They can be used to make all kinds of improvements to your smile, and in many cases, they can even correct multiple flaws at the same time. As such, they can be an excellent option for many different kinds of patients.
Some of the other benefits of veneers include:
- Getting Results Quickly: It typically takes just two appointments to place veneers.
- A Lifelike Appearance: Your veneers will be carefully personalized in order to match the appearance of your natural teeth.
- Durability: Veneers can last for 10 years or more provided that you take good care of them.
Veneers FAQs
Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?
Yes, when you first get veneers, they can sometimes cause a lisp. This is because the tongue isn’t used to the presence of the veneers yet, which affects the way it moves when you’re trying to pronounce certain words.
Fortunately, this problem will usually resolve itself over time once your tongue has had a chance to adjust. If you would like to speed up this process, it often helps to identify the words that are causing you to lisp and practice saying them repeatedly. Alternatively, our team may be able to get rid of your lisp by altering the thickness of your veneers.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
That depends on the changes you’re trying to make. If you only have a single damaged tooth that you want to improve, the problem can typically be solved with just one veneer. On the other hand, if multiple teeth have to be covered in order to make the desired changes, then you may need anywhere from 6 to 12 veneers. Once our team has examined your smile and has learned more about your cosmetic goals, we can give you our recommendation for the appropriate number of veneers in your case.
Can You Whiten Veneers?
No, the treatments used to whiten your teeth will not work on veneers. Thus, if you are bothered by stained or otherwise discolored veneers, your best option is to have them replaced or re-shaded.
It’s worth noting that some patients choose to use both teeth whitening and veneers to enhance their smiles. If you take this approach, it’s best to have teeth whitening performed first. That way, your veneers can be customized to match your newly brightened teeth.
Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?
If the tooth you want to improve has a cavity, you shouldn’t have a veneer placed until the problem has been properly dealt with. If you cover a cavity with a veneer, the decay will only continue to grow worse over time, and your dentist will have a harder time treating it than they might have otherwise.
On top of that, veneers are not recommended for those with untreated gum disease. Swollen gums can affect the accuracy of dental impressions, which can ultimately result in veneers that don’t fit as they should.
Can Veneers be Eligible for FSA Coverage?
An FSA (Flexible Spending Account) can be used to pay for all kinds of medical and dental procedures. You typically can’t use an FSA to help pay for purely cosmetic dental services. However, if veneers are being placed to address a dental issue such as a damaged tooth, they could potentially be covered by an FSA. Note that your dentist will need to provide you with a Letter of Medical Necessity before you can use your FSA to help pay for veneers.
