Choosing to get a CEREC crown means that you can have a damaged or decayed tooth repaired with a beautiful restoration in just a day. However, before you can receive a crown of any kind, your dentist will first need to prepare your tooth. To make sure you’re ready for your CEREC appointment, here’s a brief look at what you can expect from the preparation stage – as well as what will happen afterward.

How Will Your Tooth Be Prepared for a CEREC Crown?

Your dentist will take the following steps in order to prepare your tooth for a new crown:

  • First, they will perform a thorough examination of your mouth, taking note of the state of the tooth as well as the area around it.
  • To make sure you stay comfortable during the next steps of preparation, your mouth will be temporarily numbed with a local anesthetic. Patients who are nervous about the procedure may want to have sedation administered as well.
  • Any decayed areas of the tooth will be removed in order to ensure that the problem does not spread any further.
  • To make sure that there is plenty of room for the dental crown, the tooth will be reshaped.

What Happens After Your Tooth Has Been Prepared?

Once the tooth has been prepared, your dentist can move on to the process of designing, creating, and placing your CEREC crown. They will begin by capturing digital scans of your tooth. Said scans will be used to create a three-dimensional model of your mouth. Special software will then design your crown based on the specifications of the model.

After the correct shape and size for the crown have been determined, the CEREC milling unit will create the restoration out of a block of ceramic material. The completed crown will be attached to your tooth using dental cement.

CEREC crowns can definitely save you time compared to traditional crowns, but they still require your dentist to make the right preparations. If you want to learn more about what it is like to get a CEREC crown, you should speak to your dentist; they will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you get ready for the process of restoring your grin.
