What are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

You’re probably familiar with the idea of a traditional dental crown and how it’s used to strengthen and protect damaged teeth. With CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics), it’s possible to create a crown right here in our office so that it can be attached to your tooth right away. The CEREC system takes advantage of advanced technology such as:

  • A camera that can be used to take pictures of your teeth from a variety of angles.
  • State-of-the-art software that can be used to create a crown that’s precisely the right fit and color for your smile.
  • A milling unit that can create your crown out of a block of ceramic material.

When you come to our office for a consultation, our team can take a look at your damaged tooth and let you know whether a CEREC same-day crown is recommended in your case.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

An appointment for getting a CEREC crown can often be completed in just a few hours. Here’s what will happen during your visit:

  • The mouth will be numbed, and a small amount of enamel will be filed away from specific areas of the tooth in question.
  • The CEREC system’s camera will capture images of your teeth. A computer will use these images to determine the ideal design for your crown.
  • We’ll use our milling unit to make your crown. This part of the process typically takes around 20 minutes.
  • Our team will take a look at your new crown to see if there are any problems. If everything seems all right, the crown will be attached to your tooth.

The Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

Both CEREC crowns and traditional crowns are invaluable when it comes to keeping damaged or weakened teeth safe from further harm. However, with a CEREC crown, you won’t have to wait nearly as long for your final restoration. There will also be no need for you to wear a temporary crown, and you won’t have to make room in your schedule for a second appointment. A CEREC crown can last between 10 to 15 years. Its exact lifespan can vary, but you can typically expect it to last longer if you give it proper maintenance and avoid bad habits like chewing on your fingernails.
